The world inspires fury in me. But I know that only rationality, logic and reason can be utilised to overcome the world. So should I quash the rage? Repress it far down deep into the pits of my psyche were it can fester, mutate and spread, infecting all the constituent parts of my soul? Is that rational? Logical? Reasonable? Doesn’t it make more sense to keep that rage up in the top layers of my consciousness? This way I can keep control of it and direct it back towards its original causes, the illogical, the irrational, the unreasonable forces in the world, the ones who currently hold sway, who hold all the power.
Reason is not necessarily in opposition to emotion. Reason is mathematical, as is everything in the universe, therefore so are emotions. It’s not a question of reason defeating emotions, but rather, as ever, finding the synthesis between them. Mind and matter are merely two expressions of the same thing. The same goes for reason and emotions.
Schopenhauer said that music was the expression of the Will. Leibniz said that music was the mind performing mathematics unconsciously. So music is both mathematical reason and emotional Will. When the two combine properly one’s rage can be focused, consciously directed towards those that stand in the way, blocking the light of the shining sun of Truth.
Emotions, like everything else in the universe, are energy waves. In the infinite depth of our minds lies an unlimited source of energy. If our emotions are repressed they will fester, the energy will swirl around the inside of our minds and will become destructive, will tear our minds apart. To prevent this, we must release the energy. Anger can be a huge release of energy, with each release serving to purify our minds, to cleanse them of the negative energy. Once released from our minds, the energy of anger can be harnessed and put to constructive use, to cast down the obstacles in our path and pave the way towards divinity.
Which makes more sense – being made angry and then destroying yourself with that anger, or utilising that anger to destroy the original source of the anger? When raw emotion is fused with reason in a perfect synthesis, we can achieve unthinkable things, we can bathe the world in the blinding light of Truth and Reason, we can take control of our lives and our destinies, we can cross the bridge over the abyss and arrive at the glorious, divine temple of the Gods.
All of this is best demonstrated by artists who pour their anger at the world into their work. Creating art of the highest quality requires technical skill and competency, which requires calmness, focus, intelligence, reason, logic and rationality. But to imbue art with genuine passion requires raw emotional wilful power. When this raw emotion is focused and constrained by technical skill, great art can be born, a balance is created, a balance between logic and emotion, between logos and mythos, between form and content.
